When defining who you are, there are important aspects to consider:
What are your morals?
What are your goals?
What is important to you, and what isn’t?
What do you want to achieve in the next year? The next three?
When writing these answers down, be true to yourself. Set a timer if it helps you get answers down quickly. Writing with a stream-of-conscious approach may work best here for what comes to mind first. Then again, you may want to allow these questions to soak in before writing the answers. This will be important to know once you begin the next steps in choosing your brand.
What exactly is a brand? You see this everywhere; From fast food restaurants to the computer mouse you’re using right now, brands are what consumers see first.
“A brand is an identifying symbol, mark, logo, name, word and/or sentence that companies use to distinguish their product from others. A combination of one or more of those elements can be utilized to create a brand identity. Legal protection given to a brand name is called a trademark.” (Will Kenton, 2018)
To find your brand, you must focus on what makes you unique. If you’re trying to find a new job, or you’re hoping to start a business, these factors will help you become more vibrant across a sea of neutrals. Be the bright orange or the sunshine yellow. Pick attributes of yourself that could assist you in succeeding and reaching your goals. They should be facets of your life that can be developed into your brand story if you are an entrepreneur.
Be brave, be innovative, be true to your core. This will build the foundation you need for a strong start. Add some pepper to that bland business proposal or seek out a challenging position and write a kick-ass cover letter. Whatever the situation, don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone.
