Brainstorming Your Business in Three Steps

Online boutiques are becoming a dime a dozen. So are online craft stores and most professional services. Whatever your passion is, it can be profitable. Maybe you like drawing cartoons and all your friends have said, “This should be on tv! This is amazing.” Maybe you like singing and want to help promote your voice. First thing you need to do is brainstorm.

For me, Valkyrie Visions was a random thought I had whilst sitting on the couch with my husband Aaron. We were watching Jessica Jones on Netflix, which has zero to do with writing. I remember thinking, “I’d love to have my own business.” And aloud, I told Aaron, “I could totally own my own business.” Confidence in my voice threw me off. I was super serious.

Then the brainstorming began. I took out a purple gel pen and a blank notebook, ready to write what came to mind.

Step One: Visualize!

Think about your passions. Focus on one that could benefit others. I chose writing. Take a pen and paper and write down words associated with your passion that mean something important to you. Don’t spend too much time trying to make sense. That’s for later. See my example below. You should only focus on this exercise for five minutes. Timing yourself helps as well!

Step Two: Columnize!

Take your words and on a separate sheet of paper, divide your words into columns that relate to each other. For example, you’re passionate about fashion and wrote down: clothing, vibrant, inexpensive, shoes, and unique. You would put clothing and shoes together because those are consumer goods. Unique and vibrant would go under the next column as meaningful adjectives to you. Inexpensive would then be alone, as it’s an attribute to what you want to sell.

My table may not make any sense right away, but these words shaped Valkyrie Visions. That’s where we land on . . .

Step Three: Organize!

Organize your words into a solid thought. For the fashionista, you could say, “I want to offer vibrant, unique, inexpensive clothing and shoes.” Elaborate on it, let it simmer in the stockpot of your mind for a bit and see what you come up with. That should be your focus on creating a foundation to your business.

For me, I offer advice that is impactful and important. I offer editing services and strategic marketing. As for the memoirs, I sprinkle the truth of my life into my work because that is also important to me.

Leave comments down below! I’d love to see what you all come up with.

As Always,

Stay fierce, Valkyrie!
